British Dance Bands Of 1928
In choosing a varied selection of British dance music from 1928, I'm indebted to Jonathan Holmes for his inventiveness and innate ability to achieve the best transfers without compromising the original 78s. He also has the where-withal to produce this video with a promptness that took me aback, in the most positive manner.
The year 1928 offered some memorable songs, of which "I can't give you anything but love",
"Crazy Rhythm" and "Varsity Drag" were big hits and are included in this selection. There's also the light hearted "Henry's made a lady out of Lizzie", as well as some less well remembered songs but all of which are up tempo.

Say To Yourself I Will Be Happy - Nat Star and his Orchestra
Просмотров 191Месяц назад
There are two records in my collection of "Say to yourself I will be happy" by Nat Star. These are the normal Sterno issue (1062) backed by "Crazy People" and this example with a different coupling. Free from the usual embellishments of the Sterno label, these Special Demonstration Records were likely used in gramophone record shops or forwarded to associated musical magazines as advance copies...
Sunshine And Roses - Harry Roy and his R.K.Olians

Harry Roy early in his recording career as as a bandleader when he was resident in Leicester Square and before he had secured a permanent contract with Parlophone. Between October 1931 to January 1932, Roy recorded four sessions for Vocalion's nine inch Broadcast label. These sessions resulted in just eight records. This was from his final session and the last Broadcast record to bear his name....
Livin' In The Sunlight, Lovin' In The Moonlight - Alfredo and his Band

Bandleader Alfred Gill better known as Alfredo, recorded exclusively for Edison Bell from 1925 to 1930. This recording is from his final recording session for the company. He later changed from the dance band scene and adopted a gypsy style of music. Strictly speaking, this is an Al Bowlly item but I didn't include it in my recent Bowlly uploads as he sings a duet with Les Allen who is much mor...
Yankee Doodle Dandy - Burt Shepard (1906 Recording)
Просмотров 3352 месяца назад
It makes a change from sharing dance band and personality records of the 1920s and '30s, to feature this record which is the earliest shared on my channel. I've heard it said that Burt Shepard was on the same ship as Fred Gaisberg travelling from the U.S. to England in 1898. It's true to state that Gaisberg did talent scout and Shepard's British recording career began in1898. It seems apt to sh...
Stanley Boy - 1929 Campaign Song For Stanley Baldwin
Просмотров 1232 месяца назад
The altering of lyrics for political purposes is reminiscent of wartime recordings by Charlie and his Orchestra. This example is a good ten years earlier. Upon hearing "Sonny Boy" being played at a party function, Waldron Smithers M.P. decided he would change the lyrics to promote party leader and Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. The end result was "Stanley Boy". The introduction proves that thi...
Walkin' My Baby Back Home - Al Bowlly w. Jack Leon and his Band
Просмотров 3022 месяца назад
My six part tribute to Al Bowlly with some of the less famous bands of the day, finishes with Jack Leon and his band. "Walkin' my baby back home" was a popular song of 1931 which resulted in eight British dance band recordings. Harry Hudson recorded the tune twice, on Winner and Radio. The latter including a duet with Al and Harry Hudson. This is the only version where Al sings the tune solo. R...
And How? - Betty Bolton (Final recording)
Просмотров 2652 месяца назад
It seems fitting to conclude my six part tribute to Betty Bolton with her final recording. The first of my selection also featured her on the Eclipse label, using the pseudonym of Gracie Collins with "You didn't have to tell me". Her last recording was issued, like most of her output, under her own name. Only one of my chosen examples was included on the 2018 Betty Bolton CD, "I like to do thin...

What Good Am I Without You? - Betty Bolton
Просмотров 1233 месяца назад
A 2018 CD of Betty Bolton's recordings features twenty six of her titles but not include any of her Decca issues. Having already shared "My handy man", here's another from her Decca output. "What good am I without you?" serves as my penultimate Betty Bolton offering. Betty sounds as determined as ever and I particularly like the way the tempo increases for the final chorus. Recorded 25th Octobe...
Drums In My Heart - Al Bowlly w. Arthur Lally & his Orchestra

For my fourth of out six uncommon Al Bowlly recordings it's "Drums in my heart". This stirring song is one of only two British dance band versions. Recorded 30th June 1932 Transfer and video by Jonathan Holmes
I Like To Do Things For You - Betty Bolton

Betty Bolton's first recordings were issued on Columbia in 1929 and continued into the following year. "I like to do things for you" is from Betty's last solo session for Columbia and the only song she recorded from "The King of Jazz". Recorded 8th May 1930. Transfer and video by Jonathan Holmes
Roamin' Thru' The Roses - Al Bowlly w. Marius B. Winter & his Dance Orchestra
Просмотров 7543 месяца назад
With my third Al Bowlly tribute we hear him with Marius B. Winter's orchestra. It's not a band we hear that often but I feel he deserves inclusion in this selection. The first record I found of this bandleader was "The King's Horse's" backed by "My future just passed". It was and remains the most likely to be found record by Winter's orchestra. The sides which feature Al Bowlly are somewhat mor...
It Must Be True - Betty Bolton

My third Betty Bolton recording features her on one of the four sides (2 records) she recorded for Edison Bell Winner in 1931. This popular tune of the day was partly composed by American bandleader Gus Arnheim and Harry Barris, who was a member of Paul Whiteman's Rhythm Boys. Recorded c. May 1931 Transfer and video by Jonathan Holmes
